Free and trial plan limits
Limits for accounts with catalog restrictions, per-story word limits, and where to check your usage.
Who this applies to
These limits apply when your account has catalog limits, including on the free plan and during an active trial. Trial limits can change, so use the caps shown in Valo Reader as the current source of truth. Valo Reader shows the relevant caps and your current usage on the Account page and on the [Shared Library](/library/shared) page.
Imported stories cap
An imported story is content you bring in yourself — paste, file upload, YouTube URL, or similar — rather than a copy from the shared library.
- The cap is lifetime: each successful import increments your count until you reach the limit.
- Your current used / cap appears on the Account page and on the [Shared Library](/library/shared) page when catalog limits apply.
- When you reach the cap, you cannot add another imported story until you purchase a full subscription or your account otherwise moves to a plan without catalog limits.
Shared library cap
A shared library import creates your private Story linked to a Shared story catalog row.
- This cap is also lifetime and counts each story you add from the shared library (including bulk series imports).
- Deleting a story does not restore capacity. Once a slot is used, it stays used even if you remove the copy from My Stories.
- Check used / cap on the Account page or on the [Shared Library](/library/shared) page.
Per-story word limit
Separate from the lifetime story counts, each import path enforces a maximum number of Words (analyzed tokens) in a single operation:
- New import (paste, file, or URL)
- File import into an existing story
- Full text replacement on an existing story
If the text you import or use to replace an existing story is longer than the limit, Valo Reader rejects the operation and shows an error. The current maximum appears below your usage in Account and on the [Shared Library](/library/shared) page.
When catalog limits do not apply
If your account does not have catalog limits, imported-story caps, shared-library caps, and per-story word limits do not apply.
